The Best Journaling App
in 2026

We reviewed seven of the most popular journaling apps across privacy, prompts, mood tracking, pricing, and platform support. Each has a genuinely different strength. The "best" app depends entirely on what you actually need from it.

Transparency notice: This guide is published by MindJrnl, and we are one of the apps reviewed. We have done our best to evaluate every app honestly, including calling out our own limitations. We believe in earning trust through transparency rather than through omission of inconvenient facts. If you find an error or bias in any review, please contact us.

What to Look for in a Journaling App

Most journaling app comparisons only look at features. We think these seven criteria matter more than any individual feature — because they determine whether an app will actually serve your journaling practice long-term.

Privacy & Encryption

Is your journal data end-to-end encrypted? Can the company access your entries? What happens to your data if the company is acquired?

Templates & Prompts

Does the app provide guided prompts, or just a blank page? Are prompts generic or personalised? Is there a structured practice built in?

Mood Tracking

Can you log your emotional state over time? Are there trend visualisations? Does mood data connect to your journal entries?

Search & History

Can you search across all past entries? Is search fast and accurate? Can you filter by date, mood, or tag?

Cross-Device Sync

Does the app work on all your devices? Is sync reliable and fast? Is there offline access?

Export & Portability

Can you export your data as PDF or plain text? Will you own your entries if the app shuts down?

Pricing & Value

What is free vs. paid? Is the pricing model transparent? Is there a meaningful free tier before committing?

Detailed App Reviews

Seven apps, reviewed honestly — including our own.

Day One

The most polished journaling experience on iOS and Mac

4/5

Pricing

Free (limited) / $2.99/mo or $24.99/yr (Premium)

Platforms

iOS, macOS, Android, Web

Best For

Apple ecosystem users who want a beautiful, photo-rich journal

Pros

  • Best-in-class design and user experience
  • End-to-end encryption on paid plan
  • Robust multimedia support (photos, video, audio, location)
  • IFTTT and Siri integrations
  • Multiple journal support
  • Excellent sync across Apple devices
  • PDF and text export

Cons

  • Premium required for sync and encryption
  • Android app is noticeably weaker than iOS version
  • No mood tracking built-in
  • No guided prompts or wellness features
  • Can feel overwhelming with minimal prompting

Privacy Assessment

End-to-end encryption available on paid plan. Squarespace acquired Day One in 2021 — privacy policy has remained strong but worth monitoring.

Our verdict

Day One remains the gold standard for pure journaling UX. If you are deep in the Apple ecosystem, want to capture memories with photos, and have no need for mental health features, it is hard to beat. The Android experience and lack of wellbeing features are real gaps.

Notion

The most flexible, but requires significant setup

3/5

Pricing

Free / $10/mo (Plus) / $15/mo (Business)

Platforms

iOS, Android, Web, macOS, Windows

Best For

Productivity power users who want full customisation

Pros

  • Infinitely customisable journal structure
  • Cross-platform including Windows
  • Strong database and linking features
  • Integrates with existing productivity workflows
  • Decent free tier
  • AI features built-in (paid)

Cons

  • Not designed for journaling — you build from scratch
  • No guided prompts or mood tracking
  • Not end-to-end encrypted
  • Can be a procrastination tool ("let me set up my perfect journal template")
  • Mobile experience is slower than dedicated apps
  • Privacy: Notion can access your content

Privacy Assessment

Notion is not end-to-end encrypted. Notion employees can theoretically access your data. Not recommended for sensitive personal entries.

Our verdict

Notion is brilliant as a life management tool and passable as a journal for people who enjoy building systems. For the privacy-conscious or those who want guided support, it falls short on both fronts.

Apple Journal

Simple, private, and free — but very limited

3/5

Pricing

Free (iOS only)

Platforms

iOS 17+ only

Best For

Casual iPhone users who want the simplest possible start

Pros

  • Completely free
  • Deep iOS integration (on-device processing)
  • Automatic suggestions from photos, music, workouts
  • End-to-end encrypted via device
  • No account required
  • Beautiful minimalist design

Cons

  • iOS only — no Android, no web, no Mac app
  • No cross-device sync outside iCloud
  • Very limited prompts and no guided practice
  • No mood tracking
  • No export to PDF
  • No community or social features

Privacy Assessment

The best privacy of any app reviewed — processes data on-device. Apple does not see your journal content. If privacy is the primary concern, Apple Journal is the safest option.

Our verdict

Apple Journal is the right answer for iPhone users who want a zero-friction starting point with no data concerns. It is genuinely good at what it does. The hard ceiling on features and the iOS-only limitation mean many users will outgrow it.

Journey

Day One's cross-platform competitor

4/5

Pricing

Free (limited) / $4.99/mo or $29.99/yr (Premium)

Platforms

iOS, Android, Web, macOS, Windows, Chrome OS

Best For

Android users who want Day One quality

Pros

  • Best cross-platform experience in this category
  • End-to-end encryption on premium
  • Strong Android and Windows apps
  • Guided prompts included
  • Mood tracking
  • Google Drive backup

Cons

  • Less polished than Day One on iOS
  • Mood tracking is basic compared to dedicated apps
  • Smaller community than Day One
  • Premium required for most useful features

Privacy Assessment

End-to-end encryption on premium plan. Privacy policy is reasonable. Google Drive backup is optional and convenient.

Our verdict

Journey is the best option for Android or Windows users who want a dedicated journaling experience. It has narrowed the UX gap with Day One significantly in recent versions.

MindJrnl

Built for mental wellness and guided reflection

4/5

Pricing

Free (core features) / $7/mo or $59/yr (Premium) / $12/mo (Couples)

Platforms

Web, iOS, Android

Best For

People who want guided mental wellness support and couples journaling

Pros

  • AI-guided prompts tailored to mood and past entries
  • Mood tracking and emotional trend analysis
  • Couples journaling (unique in this category)
  • Free tools: gratitude list, breathing exercises, stress test
  • Transparent privacy-first architecture
  • Built-in journaling methodology (not just a blank text box)
  • Strong community features (Voices)

Cons

  • Newer than Day One or Notion — smaller track record
  • Less mature mobile native app than Day One
  • No offline-first mode yet
  • Photo journaling is limited compared to Day One

Privacy Assessment

MindJrnl is built privacy-first. Entries are encrypted at rest. We do not sell data or use entries for advertising. The Couples plan has carefully designed sharing boundaries.

Our verdict

MindJrnl is the strongest choice for anyone whose journaling goal is mental wellness rather than memory capture. The AI-guided prompts, mood tracking, and couples features are genuinely differentiated. We built it, so take this review in that context — but the feature set speaks for itself.

This is our own app. We have reviewed it as honestly as possible, including noting its limitations. You are welcome to read reviews on independent platforms to validate our assessment.

Lasting (Couples)

The relationship app that includes journaling

3/5

Pricing

$11.99/mo or $79.99/yr

Platforms

iOS, Android

Best For

Couples focused on relationship health above personal growth

Pros

  • Structured couples therapy exercises
  • Strong research backing (from the Gottman Institute)
  • Shared journaling prompts
  • In-app coaching content

Cons

  • No individual journaling focus
  • Expensive for what it offers
  • No mood tracking or wellness tools
  • Limited customisation

Privacy Assessment

Standard privacy policy. Data encrypted in transit.

Our verdict

Lasting is primarily a relationship coaching app that includes some journaling. If your primary goal is couples communication and you are not interested in personal journaling, it has merit. For couples who also want individual journaling, MindJrnl's Couples plan serves both needs.

Five Minute Journal

The gratitude-first structured journal

3/5

Pricing

Free (limited) / $29.99/yr

Platforms

iOS, Android

Best For

People who want a very simple, very structured gratitude practice

Pros

  • Extremely low friction — truly five minutes
  • Consistent evidence-backed structure
  • Morning and evening prompts
  • Good habit streak features
  • Physical journal version also available

Cons

  • Very rigid structure — limited customisation
  • No mood tracking
  • No free writing space
  • Gets repetitive over time
  • Limited platform support

Privacy Assessment

Standard privacy policy. No notable privacy concerns.

Our verdict

Five Minute Journal is excellent at one thing: establishing a simple, consistent gratitude habit. It will not replace a full journaling practice, but as a gateway into daily reflection it is hard to beat for simplicity.

Our Methodology

We evaluated each app on the seven criteria described above, assigning qualitative assessments rather than arbitrary numerical scores (except for the overall rating). Each app was used as a primary journaling tool for at least two weeks before writing its review. Feature data was verified against official documentation and direct testing as of May 2026.

On conflict of interest: MindJrnl publishes this guide. We have attempted to review all apps with the same standards we would apply to a competitor reviewing us. Where our app falls short — mobile native experience, photo journaling, offline mode — we have said so directly. Our goal is to help you find the right tool, even if that tool is not ours.

Pricing accuracy: Pricing information was accurate as of the publication date and may change. Always verify current pricing on each app's official website before making a decision.

Privacy assessments: We reviewed each app's published privacy policy and where applicable, independent security audits and reported incidents. Privacy assessments reflect published information, not proprietary knowledge. We make no claim to have independently verified any app's internal security implementation.
